Financing the Future of WHO

Improving global governance
Apr 07, 2022 | The Lancet, Lawrence Gostin, Kevin Klock, Helen Clark, Fatimatou Zahra Diop et al

The WHO's resources have consistently trailed its constitutional mandate, given a deep misalignment between what governments and the public expect the organisation to do, and what it is resourced to do. The organisation is challenged by low levels of political will to increase its financing, strained government treasuries, and a battle over control of priorities, warn Lawrence Gostin, Kevin Klock, Helen Clark, Fatimatou Zahra Diop et al in their article for The Lancet. The world needs an empowered, well financed WHO at the centre of the global health architecture. To achieve this, prominent heads of state should become champions of the WHO, expending political capital to generate global will. Finance ministers must be invited as regular, fully engaged participants in WHO’s programmes and financing.
