The War in Ukraine Will Be a Historic Turning Point
The global fault lines today are no longer between the West and the communist East, but between those who adhere to a rules-based international order and those who adhere to no law at all but the law of the strongest, argues Christoph Heusgen in his article for
Foreign Affairs. The burden of addressing violations of international law must be spread more evenly. Referring to German chancellor Olaf Scholz’s description of the moment as a
Zeitenwende, a historical turning point, the author suggests that a response to Putin’s war against Ukraine and similar violations of the UN Charter in future, should be a collective one, orchestrated by states around the world that adhere to and seek to protect the fundaments of international law. This would require joint action by like-minded countries, including the G-7 countries and those governments from all continents that commit to the rule-based order based on the UN Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
