More BRICS in the Wall?

Addressing vulnerability and promoting security
Aug 15, 2022 | Institute for Security Studies

Collectively, the five-nation BRICS group is home to 26 percent of the world’s geographic area and about 42 percent of the world’s population, but holds less than 15 percent voting rights in the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
In his article for the Institute for Security Studies, Ronak Gopaldas responds to recent speculation that the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) plans to expand its membership. Rumours that Argentina could join have triggered questions around the viability and power of an expanded collective, and what it means for global geopolitics. Meanwhile. reports that China intends to argue for the inclusion of Argentina, Egypt, Indonesia, and seven other states have raised concerns that Beijing’s motive is to restructure and expand BRICS under its leadership and dilute Brazil and India’s role.
