Fighting Poverty, Profitably - Transforming the Economics of Payments to build Sustainable, Inclusive Financial Systems

Reducing poverty and improving equity
Sep 25, 2013 | Gates Foundation’s Financial Services for the Poor program

For most of the 2.5 billion people living on under $2 per day, saving money is difficult, and credit is available only at very high rates, if at all. The Gates Foundation’s Financial Services for the Poor program (FSP) explains how increasing the access of the poor to high quality, affordable financial services accelerates the well-being of households, communities, and economies in the developing world. One of the most promising ways to deliver these financial services to the poor - profitably and at scale - is by using digital payment platforms. This report compares traditional and digital payment systems in more than 30 countries, including China, India, Kenya, Nigeria, the Netherlands and the United States.
