Jul 28, 2017 | Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection, Peter-Tobias Stoll

Brexit brings substantial, complex and far-reaching challenges for both the United Kingdom and the European Union. The European Parliament (EP) is a primary source of democratic legitimation and a core legislative organ within the European Union, and will play an important role in shaping the agreement between London and the EU after Brexit. In this article for the EU Parliament's Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection, Peter-Tobias Stoll outlines the Parliament's mandate and powers; highlights the significance of the agreement(s) that must be reached between the EU and the UK; and explores options to enable the EP to fulfil its mandate and play its proper role in this process.
