Orthodox Christianity in the 21st Century
Over the last century, the Orthodox Christian population has more than doubled and now stands at nearly 260 million. Yet as this analysis by the Pew Research Forum shows, despite increases in absolute numbers, Orthodox Christians have declined as a share of the Christian population, and the global population, due to faster growth among Protestants, Catholics and non-Christians. Today, the largest Orthodox Christian population outside of Eastern Europe is in Ethiopia. Its falling share is linked to demographic trends in Europe, which has lower fertility rates and an older population than the developing regions of sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and South Asia.
