Global Uptick in Government Restrictions on Religion in 2016

According to this annual study of global restrictions on religion by the Pew Research Center, the level of restrictions imposed by governments and private groups and individuals, in 198 countries, continued to rise in 2016, to lead to the largest number of countries in which harassment took place since 2007. The most widely targeted groups in 144 and 142 countries were Christians and Muslims. Jews were harassed in 87 countries, reversing a decline in 2015. Among the 25 most populous countries, Egypt, Russia, India, Indonesia and Turkey had the highest overall levels of religious restrictions.
