Uncharted Waters - A Primer on Virtual Currency Regulation around the World

Addressing vulnerability and promoting security
Oct 16, 2018 | Center for New American Security, Julia Solomon-Strauss, Edoardo Saravalle, Claire Groden

Bitcoin and the hundreds of other virtual currencies that it inspired remain at the fringes of regulation. In this paper by the Center for New American Security, Julia Solomon-Strauss, Edoardo Saravalle and Claire Groden map the different regulatory responses to virtual currency, and identify trends and patterns in the laws. This provides a picture of the regulation of cryptocurrencies, also in many of the most significant global financial centres, and those with distinctive policy responses to the rise of cryptocurrency. Different approaches by U.S. regulatory and enforcement agencies are also outlined, and the authors provide a glossary of relevant terms to bridge the expertise gap in the virtual currency space.
