A Europeanized NATO? The Alliance contemplates the Trump era and beyond

Addressing vulnerability and promoting security
Oct 17, 2018 | War on the Rocks, Sten Rynning

In this report for War on the Rocks, Sten Rynning argues that NATO is witnessing a return of European geopolitics in parallel to the revision of geopolitical priorities occurring in the United States. European allies prefer continuity when it comes to NATO, but realise that, as power shifts, so too must institutions. If a big shift comes and the United States leaves NATO, Western Europe may scrape by, but Eastern Europe will pay the price with the loss of sovereignty. Averting this major shift requires a stronger Europe within NATO, not only in terms of budgets, but also political influence.
