A belligerent Russia is threatening Eastern Europe and the Baltic States with aggression, conventional and otherwise, at a time when China is pursuing its territorial ambitions in the East and South China Seas, also by constructing artificial islands and engaging occasionally in intimidation. In this study the Rand Corporation identifies the need for effective extended deterrence of large-scale military aggression. The authors address the criteria that distinguish successful from unsuccessful deterrence of aggression, highlighting extended deterrence
