Are We on the Road to Civilisation Collapse?

Addressing vulnerability and promoting security
Mar 24, 2019 | BBC Future, Luke Kemp

Collapse can be defined as a rapid and enduring loss of population, identity and socio-economic complexity as public services crumble and disorder ensues as government loses control of its monopoly on violence. Luke Kemp warns in this article for BBC Future that signs are worsening in areas that have contributed to the collapse of previous societies. The climate is changing, the gap between the rich and poor is widening, the world is becoming increasingly complex, and demands on the environment are outstripping planetary carrying capacity. Yet the collapse of our civilisation is not inevitable, as humans are able to learn from the wreckages of past societies.
