How Can the Security Council engage on Climate Change, Peace, and Security?

Improving global governance
Jul 18, 2019 | IPI Global Observatory

The question of whether the Security Council is an appropriate body to discuss climate change has been raised since April 2007. In this article for the IPI Global Observatory
Jake Sherman discusses the causal relationship between conflict and climate impacts, including drought, desertification, and water scarcity, and resulting security risks. Given the concern UN member states have expressed about such risks, Sherman explores what the UN Security Council has done - and what can, or should, do to address them. With the UN’s focus on prevention and sustaining peace, climate change demands more systematic attention to prevent conflicts and to strengthen resilience and adaptation.
