The African Continental Free Trade Area - Prospects and Challenges

Improving global governance
Jan 18, 2020 | African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes, Kingsley Udegbunam, Onyinye Onwuka

Intra-African trade makes up only 15 percent of African external trade. With the elimination of tariffs, intraregional trade could increase by approximately 15–20 percent in the medium term. In this article for the African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes, Kingsley Udegbunam and Onyinye Onwuka examine the prospects and challenges of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). They suggest that a commitment to the principles of the AfCFTA, after the agreement was signed by Africa’s largest economies, increases the prospect of the agreement becoming a reality that could improve industrialisation and the welfare of Africans.
