Pandemic Pandemonium: How the Virus Could Change the Trading System

Delivering sustainable economic growth
Apr 04, 2020 | Center for Strategic and International Studies, William Alan Reinsch

Autonomous technologies that are likely to benefit the most from the Covid-19 crisis include drones, autonomous long-haul trucks and container ships, and more automated production. William Alan Reinsch suggests in this article for the Center for Strategic and International Studies that supply chains will become nimbler and less reliant on China, as many of the companies providing these solutions, will, by the nature of their technology, act faster than larger but slower manufacturers like automobile producers. By forcing the shutdown of production in many parts of China to deal with the coronavirus, the government in Beijing has led Western companies to reevaluate their presence there. The pandemic is also accelerating the movement of global power away from the United States and toward nations that do not identify with U.S. interests. The World Trade Organisation will be among the losers.
