In a World of Pandemic: A Snapshot of the Geopolitical Spectrum

Addressing vulnerability and promoting security
Jul 04, 2020 | SAGE International Australia, Patrick Tyrrell

In this article for SAGE International Australia, Patrick Tyrrell explores pressures that will shape the world in future. He suggests that global inequalities will continue and more people will seek to move towards wealthier nations. The withdrawal of U.S. influence leaves a geostrategic vacuum that will be filled by China; and a swing away from Western democracy and a rise in autocracy and intolerance. Many nations will seek to repatriate manufacturing capacity. The world will be characterised both by greater introspection, with states taking more responsibility for their national interests, and more populist governments, less concerned with alliances; and by a countervailing need for international cooperation on climate change, scarce resources and future pandemics.
