The Global South as a Political Project

Addressing vulnerability and promoting security
Jul 10, 2020 | E-International, Luciana Ballestrin

As an indicator of poor and developing countries in contrast to richer and developed ones, the “Global South” is the heir of the “Third World”. In this article for E-International, Luciana Ballestrin points out that both denominations use the stage of economic development towards modernity as the defining parameter. Modernity and development are identified with progress or evolution. She suggests that the Global South cannot be seen simply as a set of non-developed and non-modern countries located in ex-colonial zones. The Global South is a political project disputed by progressive and regressive forces in a multipolar context, and faces several challenges in maintaining itself as a political project to achieve a fairer and more equal world.
