Innovations for Sustainability - Pathways to an efficient and sufficient Post-pandemic Future

Delivering sustainable economic growth
Sep 28, 2020 | The World in 2050

The current rate and direction of innovation will not achieve the UN’s goals for an inclusive sustainable future for all, not least because of a relatively narrow focus on technology innovation, leaving aside societal, institutional, and cultural innovation. This report, the third by The World in 2050 initiative of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis, assesses the positive potential benefits innovation brings to sustainable development for all, while highlighting potential negative impacts and challenges. It outlines strategies to harness innovation for sustainability in a post-COVID-19 world by focusing on efficiency and sufficiency in providing services to people, addressing consumption and production. It concludes with related governance challenges and policy implications.
