Race is on to Reach Net Zero Emissions and Halt Runaway Nature Loss

Addressing vulnerability and promoting security
Oct 21, 2021 | UNDP, Midori Paxton,

Nature has declined more extensively over the past 50 years than at any other time in human history, warns Midori Paxton of the UNDP. Seventy-five percent of the Earth’s ice-free land surface has been significantly altered; more than 85 percent of wetland areas has been lost; and with the oceans in crisis the world faces the loss of up to one million species in a few decades. Biodiversity COP15 and Climate COP26 are part of the same race to control the planetary crises. In this article, she discusses why only a fraction of climate finance is invested in nature-based solutions. She notes the finding of the World Economic Forum that a new nature economy could generate up to $10.1 trillion in annual business value and create 395 million jobs by 2030.
