The Quad Needs a Harder Edge

Addressing vulnerability and promoting security
May 24, 2022 | Foreign Affairs, Dhruva Jaishankar, Tanvi Madan

Despite the progress the four-nation Quad – US, Australia, India, and Japan - has made on issues including technology, health, cybersecurity, and climate change, it must do more to deliver on its core security goals, argue Dhruva Jaishankar and Tanvi Madan in their Foreign Affairs article. China’s growing assertiveness and Russia’s unprovoked attack on Ukraine has only made the Quad more relevant, driving home the possibility of such aggression in the short-to-medium term in Asia. To have a lasting effect, the Quad must do more to cooperate on shared security concerns in the Indo-Pacific and ensure that it can adapt to fast-moving crises such as regional military conflicts and natural disasters by prioritizing its security agenda.
