The Reversal of Reproductive Rights in America is Contrary to Global Trends. Why?
Although most U.S. citizens support a woman’s right to obtain a legal abortion, Republican-controlled states in the US are reversing this global trend by implementing criminal bans on legal access to all abortions. In her article for the
London School of Economics and Political Science, Pippa Norris looks at the extent to which these policies are part of a broader cultural backlash by a socially conservative minority whose hegemonic status and power is threatened by the tide of social liberalism and cultural changes in the U.S.. The opponents of reproductive rights join just two dozen countries with similar extensive restrictions - with Texas, Oklahoma, and Alabama now being more restrictive than Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Afghanistan. While secularization has risen in the U.S., religious values and behaviors have declined further and faster in many other comparable developed societies.
