Across U.S. Religious Groups, More See Decline of Marriage as Negative than Positive

Sharing core norms and values
Oct 12, 2023 | Pew Research Center

In the U.S., there is now much less concern about people having fewerchildren. Catholics and members of the historically Black Protestant traditionare as likely to say that people having fewer childrenis positive for society, as to say it is negative. Thesefindings are drawn from a new PewResearch Center survey that also examines Americans’perceptions about what makes for a fulfilling life. For people in all ofAmerica’s large religious groups, having an enjoyable job and good friends rankabove being married and having children. On thequestion of couples living together without being married, the balance ofopinion is more negative than positive in most religious groups. Religiouslyunaffiliated adults - those who say they are atheist, agnostic or religiously“nothing in particular”- are the only exceptions.
