Sustainable Skies and the Earth–space Environment

Addressing vulnerability and promoting security
Apr 05, 2024 | Nature

Human religions, cultures, timekeeping andcelebrations are all shaped by the motions of celestial objects. But now, thewindow to the Universe is changing. The rapid launch of hundreds of thousandsof satellites into low Earth orbit will significantly alter human’s view of thesky and raise concerns about the sustainability of Earth’s orbital space. A newframework for sustainable space development must balance technologicaladvancement, protection of space environments and human capacity to explore theUniverse, note Andrew Williams, Aaran Boley et al in their article for Nature. It is time to reconsider the principles governing space sustainability. Ashumanity’s space capabilities expand, so do the challenges.
